Electrical and Instrumentation Lead Technician

Position Summary

The Electrical & Instrumentation Lead Technician is responsible for leading electrical and instrumentation maintenance activities throughout the paper manufacturing facility. This position ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical systems, process controls, instrumentation, and automation equipment. The Lead Technician provides technical guidance to maintenance team members, troubleshoots equipment issues, and supports continuous improvement efforts to maximize production uptime.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate electrical and instrumentation maintenance activities during assigned shifts.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical systems, motor controls, PLCs, drives, instrumentation, and process control equipment.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on production equipment.
  • Support paper machine, converting equipment, utilities, and plant infrastructure.
  • Assist with equipment installations, upgrades, and capital improvement projects.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety policies, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and electrical safety standards.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Train and mentor maintenance technicians on electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Work closely with operations personnel to minimize downtime and improve equipment reliability.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation in the maintenance management system.
  • Participate in troubleshooting during emergencies and production outages.
  • Support continuous improvement and reliability initiatives throughout the facility.
  • On Call

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or apprenticeship preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of industrial electrical and instrumentation maintenance experience.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably paper, pulp, converting, or other heavy industrial operations.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • PLC systems (Allen-Bradley preferred)
    • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
    • Motors and motor controls
    • Instrumentation and process controls
    • Electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and technical diagrams.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Previous project planning and managing.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand, walk, climb ladders, bend, and lift-up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in industrial manufacturing conditions including heat, noise, dust, and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
