Assistant Mill Chemist

Description

The Assistant Mill Chemist works alongside the production team in order to maximize safety, quality and production. The Mill Chemist and their Assistant are directly responsible for the management of all chemical systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned)

The Assistant Mill Chemist’s primary responsibilities as part of the mill operational team include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining safety standards in the chemical areas
  • Maintaining chemical inventories
  • Maintaining chemical delivery systems
  • Determining, reporting and optimizing chemical costs
  • Evaluating trials
  • Training operators on chemical and general technical concepts
  • Monitoring lab equipment
  • Designing and running trials
  • Designing and installing new chemical equipment

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

The educational requirements are four (4) year Bachelor of Science in Pulp and Paper Science,

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

The experience requirements are two years of Paper Mill Chemical experience or Chemical Technical Service. Paper Mill experience is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

The candidate must speak and write English at a college level.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

The candidate must be able to solve college level mathematical equations. The candidate must be able to use college level algebra, geometry and calculus to solve problems in the mill.

REASONING ABILITY

The candidate must be able to use knowledge of papermaking and papermaking chemistry to solve process, equipment and quality problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Employee is regularly required to walk, talk, and hear

Employee is frequently required to stand; use hands and reach with hands and arms

The employee is occasionally required to sit

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

Vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

This position will require working an on-call rotation schedule within the chemical department

WORK ENVIRONMENT

65% of all work will be on the production floor in a hot environment. As this is a production environment with multiple motors this will be a high noise environment. Hearing protection is required. This position will require working with hazardous chemicals on a daily basis.
